Too Old at 35? Is There Hope for Your Old Age?

This another summary of a self development article. Hello, and welcome to the series of self development articles. It works like this – I find an article on the web using the tag ‘self development articles’ and I summarize it for your convenience.

Today’s Self Development Article – Too Old at 35?

Strictly speaking it wasn’t an article. It was an answer to a question on the Quora forum. The question was “I’m 35 years old and I feel that I never do something significant in my life. Is there hope for me in my old age to change my life to be more productive?

Summary of the Article

The answer to the question first dealt with what the questioner meant by ‘significant.’ Then also turned to what was meant by the use of the word ‘productive.’ It is a valid tactic because one person’s ‘significant’ or ‘productive’ may not be the same as the next person.

The author then moves on to defining ‘terms’ or setting goals. And, stresses the need for action once those goals are identified.

The most important question is this: do you believe that you’re living the way you want to live, and not the way you think you should be living?” That is the question the author stresses must be asked.

About the Author and Lesson(s) Learned From The Article

This is the author’s bio on Quora – Anne L. Hogue-Boucher, Horror & Weird Fiction Writer, Former Supervised Therapist, Master’s Level.

The real lesson learned was how to break down an apparently lengthy problem into small chunks. The author does just that in magnificent style resulting in not only a superb answer but one that is so easy to read and comprehend. Bravo!

My Take

It was a joy to read Anne’s answer. She possesses a sense of humor too. This is how she starts her answer:

It is never too late, unless you’re dead. Are you dead right now? No, of course not, or you wouldn’t be able to ask the question. On top of that, you’re only 35 years old. That’s not old. Not at all, unless we’re in a time warp and this is somehow 1840.

So the good news is, there’s hope. There’s always hope.

It also reeks of authenticity because she has been through a life-changing event. She describes that thus:

For me, the job was productive and significant, but it didn’t feel right for me. It wasn’t right for me. So, at 35, I left. I quit. I left it all behind, took my English degree, and did what I really wanted to do.

I became a writer.

Her perspective resonates with me. I went to law school in my 40’s to qualify as a barrister (trial counsel) in the UK. I know where she is ‘coming from.’

Conclusion

I heartily recommend you read the article in full. It is well crafted and full of good advice.

Formal Education vs Self Development

Indeed, I am a great believer in self development. Formal education can only teach you so much. The rest is up to you. Learning is within the capacity of all. We do it as soon as we leave the womb and it should be a continuous process. You are never too old to learn.

Through my passage in life, I feel qualified to pass on my wisdom about self development. I feel so strongly about it that I intend to eventually offer one to one consultations to help anyone who is prepared to listen. Listening and learning are the easy bits. You as an individual have to implement those lessons. No one can do it except you!

You can be the most intelligent person on earth but without self- awareness and self development then you run the risk of stagnating. Even worse, you could go backwards.
