Lazy Man’s Guide – 37 Best Websites To Learn Something New

This is a further post in what has become a series about self development. The idea is that I take an article or perhaps a video or an infographic and summarize what it really means.  I have always been a believer in self development even before it became trendy!

Shucks I even write about self development in my About page! And if you need to know more then please check out my Personal Development page. Self development? Personal Development? C’est la même chose!

Summary of the Article

Kristyna Z. writes in Medium about The 37 Best Websites To Learn Something New. Yes, it is one of those ubiquitous list posts. You know, 5 best, 10 worst etecetera.

Many of these list articles leave me cold. Why? It is a symptom of our internet age in that a list does two things –

  • It is a lazy way of coming up with an idea for an article in that it doesn’t usually take too many words to bash one out based on a list
  • It causes a lot of work for the reader in following all the links especially in this case where there are 37 – even worse when it gets to 101 or more!

Yet, clearly there is a place for them and they can save the trouble of curating content for yourself. Other than those observations, there is little else to summarize. I include it in my series because it encompasses self development.

Is it worth the read? Hmm! Jury is still out.

If you have a thirst for information like me then I can help. I believe I have found part of the  solution through Blinkist. It is an app that if used properly can be a tremendous aid to self development.

Reading Time of the Article

3 minutes – it’s ironic that this post of mine will take longer to read!

Wow! A very impressive resumé!

One of the key lessons I took away was how to write an impressive list type article! Apart from that I learned little owing to the type of article that it is. It serves a purpose and that’s it!

My Take

This time my take on the article is straightforward because it is so lacking in content – apart from the all important list. So, in fairness I will check out just one of the websites that she recommends. It is a free foreign language learning site. I have enough French left in me to be able to assess the site. Please wait … I will be back in a few minutes while I test the site 🙂

I am impressed! There is an easy to use interface and you can set your learning level from 5 minutes per day to an “insane” 20 minutes. I like it! And, it does appear to be free. But I didn’t get as far as creating a ‘profile’. Maybe it then gets ‘less free’?

Conclusion

It’s a worthwhile bookmark. I say that based on my test of only one of the 37 websites but that was encouraging.

One of the advantages of me going through many hurdles of trying to create and improve myself in my retirement is that I have discovered things that work. Things that aid productivity.

Self Development and Blinkist

One of those is Blinkist.

Formal Education vs Self Development

Indeed, I am a great believer in self development. Formal education can only teach you so much. The rest is up to you. Learning is within the capacity of all. We do it as soon as we leave the womb and it should be a continuous process. You are never too old to learn.

Through my passage in life, I feel qualified to pass on my wisdom about self development. I feel so strongly about it that I intend to eventually offer one to one consultations to help anyone who is prepared to listen. Listening and learning are the easy bits. You as an individual have to implement those lessons. No one can do it except you!

You can be the most intelligent person on earth but without self- awareness and self development then you run the risk of stagnating. Even worse, you could go backwards.
