Self Development Articles: 5 Bad Habits

Another summary of self development articles that I find on the web. You can view all the previous summaries in the series by clicking on this category link.

The full title of the article is 5 Wrongheaded Attitudes Stunting Your Growth as an Entrepreneur by Kimanzi Constable. It was a contribution to the Entrepreneur magazine.

Today’s Self Development Article – 5 Bad Habits

Yes, the title is all about wrong attitudes but those attitudes may also be bad habits. Indeed the author writes, “Your personal habits and struggles can either cause your business to flourish or have it end up becoming another statistic.”

Whether you wish to call them habits or attitudes is somewhat superfluous to the lessons contained within Constable’s message.

Summary of the Article

No points awarded for guessing that the author details the 5 attitudes that he urges entrepreneurs to avoid. But he stresses the ‘A’ word that we hear so often within self development articles – “awareness.” That coupled with hard work.

About the Author and Lessons Learned From The Article

He is a published author, international speaker, life and business coach. His mission is to help men and women live life by their own design and create true freedom in life.

He lists the 5 “Wrong Headed Attitudes” thus:

  1. Constantly reacting with emotion
  2. Unwillingness to admit when you’re wrong
  3. Dismissing sensible advice
  4. Letting envy sidetrack you
  5. Losing your momentum at the first sign of resistance

Perhaps the lesson learned is that if you display all of those traits then it is doubtful you will ever succeed as an entrepreneur!

My Take

I have worked for some very successful businessmen who have succeeded despite displaying some if not all of those attitudes listed from 1 – 4. I know that contradicts what I wrote above. Yet, in the real world people do succeed against all the odds. It may be a question of timing or having the latest ‘must have’ widget. Yet, the advice within the article is sound.

But, having said that, in my experience the people who I knew as successful entrepreneurs all had tremendous drive and energy. Yet, I would say that they all possessed at least one of the above flaws. And, they are flaws. They are not so much “attitudes” or “bad habits; they are character defects!

Interestingly, #2 was present in all of them. Not one of them could ever admit they were wrong!

Conclusion

It’s a good read.  It is an easy read and carries a strong and important message. My comments in “My Take” are perhaps a bit ‘old school.’

I experienced working with those people during the 1980s. I think we now have a new breed of entrepreneur. Thank goodness!

Formal Education vs Self Development

Indeed, I am a great believer in self development. Formal education can only teach you so much. The rest is up to you. Learning is within the capacity of all. We do it as soon as we leave the womb and it should be a continuous process. You are never too old to learn.

Through my passage in life, I feel qualified to pass on my wisdom about self development. I feel so strongly about it that I intend to eventually offer one to one consultations to help anyone who is prepared to listen. Listening and learning are the easy bits. You as an individual have to implement those lessons. No one can do it except you!

You can be the most intelligent person on earth but without self- awareness and self development then you run the risk of stagnating. Even worse, you could go backwards.
