Dreams and Songs – Fields of Anfield Road

The “Fields of Anfield Road” – “We had dreams and songs to sing”

“Dreams and Songs” is taken from the “Fields of Anfield Road.” It is one of the iconic songs in the repertoire of Liverpool Football Club supporters on match days both at home and away.

Shankly Family Foundation

I have met some great people through Twitter and many Reds fans of course! They include @Dream-n-Songs. This is a guy who has set up a new website called “Dreams and Songs to Sing.” He has a product range of clothing (threads) that nods to the iconic “Fields of Anfield Road” anthem. I have no affiliation with the site or this guy at all. The products seem sound enough but what impressed me was his statement that he was going to donate 20% of profits to the Shankly Family Foundation. (SFF)

The foundation was established as a charity by the legendary Bill Shankly’s family as a charity. The aims of the charity mirror the philosophy of  the “Great Man” himself.

I was only too pleased to promote Dreams and Songs and thus the SFF through a piece inserted into today’s edition of the Liverpool FC Daily.

As a fan of the Reds since 1960, Bill Shankly holds a special place in my heart. He was not only a great footballer, so I am told, a great football manager but also a special man – a “man of the people.”

My Dad was a police officer in Liverpool for many years. For a good few of those  years, he was responsible as a Police Sergeant for the policing of both Anfield and Goodison Park on match days. The Liverpool City Police sergeants at that time were distinctive by way of the silver wire thread used in the three chevrons on the tunic arm. The sergeant also used to carry a long night stick. You can just make that out in the photo above if you look at the sergeant in the background.

He came into contact with Shanks frequently. My Dad was not easily impressed, but he recounted many tales to me of how genuine and honest Mr. Shankly was. (Dad always called him Mr. Shankly even when Shanks was not present!)

Enough from me for now. I’ll see you all after the Christmas break, so a very Merry Christmas to you all!

One more thing – this is a great version of the “Fields of Anfield Road.” And if that’s not enough, then what about this non-studio version?

Outside the Shankly Gates
I heard a Kopite calling :
Shankly they have taken you away
But you left a great eleven
Before you went to heaven
And the red men are still playing the same way

All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could play)
We had Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

Outside the Paisley Gates
I heard a Kopite calling
Paisley they have taken you away..
You led the great 11
Back in Rome in 77
And the redmen they are still playing the same way

All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could play)
We had Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road.
