Why Blog? Blogging 201

Blogging 201 – Day 1 – Task: Set 3 Goals Why do I blog? That is a very good question. It wasn’t  until I found Blogging 201 in WordPress somewhere that I even began to formulate my thoughts on the answer – never mind the question!  Well here goes – In my retirement I needed something to do. I didn’t just want to sit on the beautiful Philippines beaches  all day and every day and vegetate! Or drink too much cold beer! I have lead a varied, and dare I say, interesting life. You must have experienced people saying to you, ” write it down, it’ll make a good book”. Well I did hear it and I heard it many times. So the first step…

Slice of Pie and a Slice of Philippines Life

Today I was sat in The Pastry Shop at Bob’s at Lopues East shopping center, Bacolod. Zabrina was doing the grocery shopping. I hate shopping, always have done, and more so now as I am struggling to walk with my arthritic pain. She left me with my excellent coffee and a wonderful savory pastry – a chicken and ham pie. It was my merienda time and one of the things I just adore about the Philippines. In case you are wondering – merienda is a snack usually taken between breakfast and lunch then again between lunch and dinner. This was my afternoon merienda. The next hour turned out to be my slice of pie and slice of Philippines life. I have always been an observer…

Basketball Versus Football in the Philippines

Basketball versus Football in the Philippines: No Contest? The American influence is omnipresent in the Philippines. Not surprising given the archipelago’s history. My brief today is to chat about sport. In particular my love of football – the kind you play with a round ball – you know the one Americans call soccer (sawwker) – only teasing. Basketball is the king here in the Philippines. Everyone has their favorite team and often wear basketball shirts and shorts. I love basketball too. In fact I played a lot when I was in college. I loved the silky feel to the uniform and the fact all the girls used to turn out to watch us play! But hey I’m 6’3” so a natural fit for the game.…

Noise in the Philippines

If you have a plan to retire to the Philippines then it makes sense to research your destination as much as possible. Noise in the Philippines is probably a subject that has never occurred to you. As a citizen of say the UK, USA or indeed Canada or Australia you have lived your working life in countries that have strict laws regulating noise levels. If you have a low tolerance towards noise then you may wish to reconsider your plans. Noise in the Philippines is never far away. Some of it is annoying, some pleasant and some is actually soothing – well to me anyway! Here are some points to think about. The neighbourhood If like most expats you decide to rent when you first arrive…

PART 2: DRIVING IN BACOLOD – A FOREIGNER’S PERSPECTIVE

“The original article caused a bit of a stir. Here in Bacolod it went a little bit viral! In case you missed it here it is Driving in Bacolod: A Foreigner’s Perspective But let me make this clear at the outset. The problems with road safety in Bacolod are to do with the mindsets of individual drivers, pedestrians and all road users. Nothing more and nothing less. The traffic problems here are not the fault of the current or indeed any previous administration.   I would take umbrage at any politician who attempts to use my articles on this subject in attempts to score points over the opposition or the incumbent party. I am a foreigner guest here in your country and your city. I retired…

English Football on the TV in the Philippines

I miss English football on the TV in the Philippines. It is one of the very few things I miss about the UK. I wrote those two sentences way back in July 2015 and it is now July 2017 as I write this. I have some great news for all you fans of English football. Just so as not to confuse you I will place a horizontal line under these fresh ideas on how to watch Premier League football here in the Philippines.  So anything under the line is the original article – got it? I did write down below I had no idea if IPTV is legal. It is! I write about it in a recent post here and if you click here on…

Sugar Beach, Sipalay, Negros Island

Sugar Beach is near to the town of Sipalay on Negros Island, Western Visayas, Philippines. According to Google there are just six resorts on the beach. Sugar Beach is not on the list of most famous beaches in the Philippines but it should be! Zabrina and myself drove there back in early June 2015. It is about 3 ½ hours actual driving time from Bacolod City. It took us about 5 hours in total as we stopped at Hinigaran on the way to stretch the legs and pop in to Mila’s resto. It is famous for its buko pie, a coconut filling in a light pastry. We had to have one each, plus one of their delicious chicken pies. All washed down with a native…

The Whining Foreigner In The Philippines

The Philippines often gets included in lists of “ideal places to retire.” Among the attractions are the low cost of living and the balmy tropical climate. The Philippines consists of over 7,000 islands and living inexpensively on the coastline of one of them seems like a dream. For nationals of First World countries who grew […] Source: To the foreigner who wants to retire in the Philippines This is both a well written article and a cautionary tale! Of course there are many things to enjoy here in the Philippines. On the other hand many things are …. well …. different. That should not come as a great surprise. It is not rocket science – it is a different country and culture than back home.…

I Love Bacolod

I have now written three articles about traffic/driving problems here in Bacolod and posted in Facebook a number of times about those problems. Hey I ♥ it here ! OK the traffic culture is different from the UK, the rest of Europe and the USA but it is Filipino! But there are so many things to like and indeed love Bacolod for such as the friendly people the food the restaurants the weather the beaches the fun smiling faces the importance of family the importance of faith easy going lifestyle Not forgetting the woman I love is a Filipina (I thought I had better add that to the list). So I would not like anyone to gain the impression that I am some kind of “whining…
